Ocean racing featured in the South Bay Dozen

By Randy Angel, 11:10 AM on Thu Jun 11 2009

Many of the area’s top male and female ocean racers will be competing for prizes and money at the 4th Annual South Bay Dozen presented by Hennessey’s and the Jimmy Miller Foundation. Action begins at 8 a.m. Sunday at Torrance Beach.
Nearly 100 entrants of all ages participated in last year’s event where Brian Murphy and Tandis Morgan took top honors in the men’s and women’s divisions.
The mini surf festival consists of 12 events, including individual and relay paddleboard, dory, swimming, running and surf ski races. Competitors can register the day of the event only, beginning at 7 a.m. The entry fee is $25 for all open competitors, $15 for juniors (17 & under). The single fee enables each entrant to participate in as many races as he or she wishes to compete.
All participants will be awarded raffle tickets upon finishing any race. Top 10 finishers will be awarded additional raffle tickets according to place of finish. Twelve grand prize awards (valued from $300-$600) will be given to the those selected by lottery at the prize-giving festivities held at Mickie Finnz, 1710 S. Catalina Ave. in Redondo Beach.
Prizes include wetsuits, surfboard, skateboard, stand-up paddle, canoe paddle, sunglasses and apparel. The top five men and top three women as scored by overall points will be awarded prize money
The Jimmy Miller Memorial Foundation is dedicated to honoring the life of the former Los Angeles County lifeguard through surfing and ocean related activities to help heal mental and physical illnesses. For more information on the foundation, visit jimmymillerfoundation.org.
