Voters chose Robert Jay Grossman of Hermosa, a physician with a master’s degree in Health Care Policy and Management, and Marie Corr of Redondo, a registered nurse and healthcare attorney, to join incumbent Vanessa Poster on the Beach Cities Health District board of directors.
In the four-way race for three open seats, the winners were grouped together with Grossman getting 30 percent of the vote, Poster winning 28 percent and Corr 27 percent. They beat out Brian E. Parker of Hermosa, a certified financial planner and co-owner of Enright Premier Wealth Advisors, who got 16 percent.
The seats up for grabs were previously held by Poster and outgoing board members Walt Dougher and Muriel Savikas. The tax-funded Health District dispenses millions of dollars to healthcare programs.
The morning after the election, Grossman said he plans to continue the good work that the Health District board has been doing.
Poster said she was excited that the voters returned her to her seat on the board.
We’ve started a strategic planning process for 2015 so we can be ready for the healthcare changes that will be coming, she said.
The Health District must stay ahead of changes in technology and how we communicate to effectively serve the community with preventive care and education, especially as the South Bay population continues to age, Poster said.
Corr was not immediately available.
Parker said he would be willing to serve the Health District’s finance committee as a volunteer, and might run again for a seat on the board.
During the campaign, Grossman stressed improved access to medical and dental care for our most vulnerable residents, and programs to encourage physical activity, reduce childhood obesity and deal with teen tobacco and drug use.
Poster also was endorsed by outgoing board members Dougher and Savikas and current board member Joanne Edgerton, as well as election rivals Grossman and Corr.
Corr stressed fiscal responsibility as well as quality healthcare. She pointed to her experience as a registered nurse, an attorney working with programs including Medicare, Medicaid and Medi-Cal, a volunteer BCHD committee member since 2006, a parent and a cancer survivor. ER
